The Growth of the Unions

Gordon Smith

It was through the trade unions that you could fight for better conditions and not individually be victimized.

One of the great things I found about the newspapers of 1887 was the reporting of the miners’ meetings. When you read these reports, you can actually imagine yourself there, because they say who spoke, they describe it perfectly, because, of course, in those days, they didn’t have illustrations in the newspapers, other than for advertising.
