Shipbuilding

Gordon Smith

Shipbuilding’s been recorded in Blyth since about 1745, two hundred and sixty-odd years of shipbuilding. Of course, we also had all the ancillary trades. In the early days of wooden sailing ships, you needed sail makers, block and tackle makers, mast makers and all those things that went along with the main industry.

Plus, of course, you had the cargoes and the people who loaded them. Coal was the mainstay. It was the reason for Blyth and it was the main export for many years.
