Leisure Time

Gordon Smith

One of the few places that you could go for a bit of respite was the local pub. And they were quite a centre of social activity. There were so many football teams, cycling clubs, debating clubs, you name it and there was a club for it. And it was probably catered for by the local pub.

Some of the worthies of the town, who thought that there should be better places for working men to go, came up with the idea of a Mechanics’ Institute, where you could go to lectures and night classes, and really further your education.

Matthew White Ridley stepped in yet again and had one built in 1886. It's still there today, now called the Blyth Public Library.
