What Blyth did to celebrate

Gordon Smith

About the only real thing that was done to celebrate the Jubilee in Blyth was that the Churches got together and all the Sunday School kids had a procession. They sang and I think everybody got a bun, a cup of tea or something, that was about it. They didn’t actually have a big parade or anything.

Other places did things, like they opened Jubilee Halls, which you still see dotted about the country. I think there was one in Rothbury, but Blyth didn’t do very much. We were still trying to recover from the effects of the strike and the measles epidemic. In fact, the strike had caused many of the shops to start laying off their staff and some businesses had to close.

There wasn’t a ship moved out of Blyth during the strike.
