Gordon Smith |
Blyth Local History Society |
|||
|
Local historian Gordon was brought up in Blyth and his first school was within sight of the staithes.
After attending Blyth Grammar School, he served an engineering apprenticeship as a fitter and turner with the Blyth Harbour Commission
at the Port of Blyth. Then he served three years in the Merchant Navy as an engineer.
Later, after a brief spell in Sheffield, he returned to the town and spent 27 years working for the Port of Blyth.

In 1996, he began to take a greater interest in local history after starting to research his family tree.
After joining the Blyth Local History Society, he began to digitise their collection of local photographs,
which had been given to the society over a number of years.
While teaching a course at Blyth Resource & Initiative Centre, he became involved in the Quayside Regeneration project with Harbour Lights Community Photographers. Harbour Lights had been documenting the development of the Quayside for three years and he suggested that an extra panel for their exhibition showing what the area was like before the staith tops were removed might be useful. This led to supplying images and text to Kirsty Mawhinnie of Insite Environment who created the History Panels on the Blyth Quayside. |
