Maids Of Misfortune

Gerry Tapscott

We’ve met today, us poor hardworking women
Drink up, me dears, and forget all our cares
Times are right hard when you’re short of a shilling
Earning our pennies from life below stairs

Well, here’s our Mary Ann, so full of worry
Can’t afford new shoes to show off her feet
She sews for the rich but it’s not worth the money
Victim of poverty making ends meet

Chorus:
Just for today, let’s drown all our sorrows
Cast down our crowns before Her Majesty
Off to the land of a no-hope tomorrow
Let’s hear it again for the Jubilee

Our maids of misfortune are Rosie and Dolly
Trading their bodies like Gypsy Smith’s wares
Lost is their dignity, steeped in their folly
Life has dealt cruelly in unequal shares

Gypsy Smith sells out of sheer desperation
Dubious liquids in pubs all around
The Queen’s tears for Albert being no consolation
For love or for money, there’s none to be found

Chorus
