Duty Done

by Danny Holmes

The days have grown so long
Roses raise their golden bloom
The primrose bows its head
To the forget-me-not of June
She rides an open carriage
’Round the Royal Park at Windsor
But she thinks herself
Still in the darkness of December

She wears her poor sad cap
Her face a ghostly white
Hot water, a clean towel
And his clothes laid out each night
Beside an empty pillow
His nightshirt in her arms
She craves those sacred hours
When she felt so safe from harm

Chorus:
Duty done, duty done
Her life is ended
For her, the world is gone
Duty done, duty done
But for this unhappy isle
She knows she must live on

She’d not raise a finger
She wouldn’t make a move
To put on a gown or bonnet
If she thought he’d disapprove
The crowds weep with affection
He’d have been so proud
But she knows there’s no-one
To call Victoria now

Chorus

His views her only law
She’ll carry out his plans
She will listen only
To her Angel’s sweet commands
She lives on with him
She feels it in her heart
Only for a time
Only outwardly apart
